What Proposition 65 is
California’s Proposition 65 — formally the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — requires businesses to let Californians know when a product can expose them to chemicals the state has listed as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The list covers roughly 900 chemicals and is updated each year.
A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe, defective, or in violation of any safety standard. It means a listed chemical is present at a level the state requires you be told about. You will see these warnings throughout California — in parking garages, hotels, restaurants and shops.
Why furniture carries these warnings
Upholstered furniture can contain listed chemicals in its finishes, dyes, foams, adhesives or metal components. The ones that come up most often in this category are cadmium, formaldehyde and certain flame retardants.
Our products
We sell furniture made by Coaster Fine Furniture, who identify which items carry a Proposition 65 warning and which chemicals are involved. Where an item carries one, we note it on that product’s page.
If you would like the specific warning information for any item before you order, just ask — we will get it from the manufacturer for you.
Where to learn more
The State of California maintains P65Warnings.ca.gov, which has plain-language explanations of each listed chemical, how exposure happens and how to reduce it.
